Thomas A. Sangma was elected unopposed because Congress, TMC, and Voice of the People's Party did not file any candidates for the post of Assembly Speaker

Thomas A Sangma of the ruling National People’s Party (NPP)-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) coalition was elected as the speaker of the 13th Meghalaya Assembly today.

It may be mentioned that Conrad Sangma-led MDA 2.0 government was sworn in on March 7, 2023.

Former Rajya Sabha member Thomas A. Sangma was elected unopposed because the three opposition parties-Congress, TMC, and Voice of the People’s Party did not file any candidates for the post of Assembly Speaker.

“Since only one nomination paper was received by the office of the Assembly, I hereby declare Thomas A Sangma as a speaker,” said Protem Speaker Timothy D Shira, who chaired the proceedings on the concluding day of the special Assembly session.

Conrad Sangma has become the Chief Minister of Meghalaya for a second consecutive term. Besides Sangma 11 ministers from alliance partners BJP, HSPDP, UDP, PDF and Independents having a combined strength of 45 in the House of 60 sworn in.

Protem Speaker Timothy D Shira congratulated the newly elected speaker, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and said that he was confident that the former parliamentarian will do justice to the chair.
