In an operation against illegal coal mining in Arunachal Pradesh, several metric tonnes of illegally extracted coal were seized, along with several other vehicles used in the illegal business, from the Rangringkan area under the Namtok police station of Changlang district in Arunachal Pradesh.
The operation was carried out by the Deputy Commissioner of Changlang district, Sunny K. Singh, following specific and confirmed inputs about rampant illegal coal business going on in the area.
A coal-laden dumper, five compact excavators, and four JCBs were seized from the location.
Following the busting of the illegal coal operation in the area, the DC has now issued show cause notices to the Mining Development Officer (MDO) and Officer in Charge of Namtok Police Station on charges of dereliction in discharging their official duties.
As per reports, the illegal coal operations carried out by various gangs of coal mafias reportedly have the backing of some corrupt government officials.
As per inputs, various militant groups like the ULFA (I) and NSCN (K-YA) have also been active in the area for extortion from the illegal coal operators.
In a recent case, two staff members of one such illegal coal operator were physically tortured by a group of three NSCN (K-YA) militants since the operator had reportedly refused to pay extortion money to the group.
