UDP and PDF have extended support to Conrad Sangma-led NPP just hours before swearing in of Conrad-led alliance govt on March 7

Big twist in Meghalaya politics. In just less than 48 hours before the swearing-in of Conrad Sangma’s government on March 7 with BJP, HSPDP and two Independent MLAs, the UDP and the PDF made a big U-turn and extended their support to Conrad Sangma-led NPP in a surprise move this evening.

This has taken the strength of Conrad Sangma to 45 in the 60-member Meghalaya Assembly, way beyond the majority mark of 31.

Taking to Twitter incumbent Chief Minister Conrad Sangma wrote, “Thank you UDP and PDF for coming forward to join the NPP to form the Government. The strong support from homegrown political parties will further strengthen us to serve Meghalaya and its people.”

Conrad Sangma who will be sworn in for the second consecutive term already had the support of 32 MLAs.

He had already submitted the letters of support to Governor Phagu Chauhan and staked claim to form the next government.

Till yesterday, UDP and PDF were in talks with TMC and VPP trying to stitch up an alliance and stake claim to form the government under the leadership of former Meghalaya Chief Minister and TMC leader Mukul Sangma.
UDP has won 11 and PDF won 2 seats in the just concluded Assembly elections. Congress won five seats. Trinamool Congress, which had inducted all Congress MLAs in the previous assembly, also got five seats. HSPDP has bagged two seats.
