Assam is celebrating ‘Ali Aye Ligang’ festival today offering prayers to the Lord for a good harvest
The Mishing people of Assam are celebrating one of their main festivals, the ‘Ali Aye Ligang’ festival today. The festival is marked by offering prayers to the God for a good harvest, seeking good health and well being of the people.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on the occasion of ‘Ali Aye Ligang’ expressed his greetings to the Mishing community.
Taking to Twitter, CM Sarma wrote, “মিচিং সমাজৰ হেঁপাহৰ উৎসৱ আলি আঃয়ে লৃগাং উপলক্ষে সমূহ অসমবাসীলৈ আন্তৰিক শুভেচ্ছা জ্ঞাপন কৰিলোঁ৷ উলাহৰ এই উৎসৱটিয়ে সকলোৰে জীৱনলৈ কঢ়িয়াই আনক সুখ-শান্তি, সম্প্ৰীতি আৰু সমৃদ্ধিৰ বতৰা৷”.
How it Ali Aye Ligang celebrated:
It is usually celebrated on the first Wednesday of the Phagun month, which starts from mid-February.
The words Ali Aye Ligang stands for first sowing of roots and fruits in which ‘Ali’ stands for seeds. ‘Aye’ for Fruits and ‘Ligang’ for sowing.
Ali Aye Ligang marks the beginning of agricultural cultivation. The festival mainly includes offering prayers, singing and dancing and feasting .
The women folk usually get busy preparing Apong and Purang, essential food items of Ali Aye Ligang.
Special food served:
Poro Aapong’ or rice beer, dried fish, pork, ‘Purang Apin’ (packed boiled rice) are specially prepared by the Mishings for the festival.
Dance and Music:
Music for all kinds of songs and beats for the dance is composed with instruments such as cymbal, gungang (gagana), sifung (flutes), gong, and drums, etc.
The celebration of Ali aye Ligang not only reflect the socio-cultural identity of the Mising people, but also has a definite role in the cultural convergence with the greater Assamese society.
