Tragic: Kaziranga rhino dies of exhaustion and hunger after being chased by ‘insensitive crowd’, Assam CM orders probe

First Published: 7th February, 2023 10:34 IST

Khumtai MLA Mrinal Saikia has blamed Golaghat administration and police of inaction and sought punitive action against them

In a tragic incident in Assam’s Kaziranga, a rhino died after being allegedly chased and attacked by a crowd after it had strayed into human habitat. The rhino is said to have died due to inhuman crowd behaviour. The rhino that had come out of the Kaziranga National Park had lost its way and was trying to reach a safe place away from the scary, noisy crowd. The rhino is also said to have died of hunger and exhaustion.
Highlighting the incident, MLA of the area, Mrinal Saikia held the Golaghat Administration and the police of failing to save the rhino from the atrocities of ‘insensitive crowd’.
“The stray #rhino is most probably dead and I hold the insensitive crowd and Golaghat Administration solely responsible for it. Forest Officials tried to save it from public atrocities but @GolaghatPolice did not co-operate. I demand punitive action. @himantabiswa sir,” MLA Saikia tweeted.

Acting immediately, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has ordered a probe into the unfortunate and tragic death of the rhino.

The news of the death of a rhino in a painful and heartless manner has come as a shock to many as the one-horned rhino is Assam’s state animal and the government and several organisations have been doing a lot to protect it and ensure its well being particularly in and around the Kaziranga National Park, its main habitat.

Last year in 2022, the Assam government and the people of Assam took a lot of pride in announcing that not a single rhino could be killed by poachers. Rhino poaching had been a big problem and a menace in Assam. But such tragic deaths of rhinos and elephants in the hands of the common man raises questions about the human behaviour and lack of feeling and emotion of the people towards birds and animals and the environment at large.
