In a big development in the Sikkimese Nepali foreigners tag row, Bikash Chamling, son of former Sikkim CM and SDF President Pawan Chamling was arrested for his alleged involvement in the effigy burning of CM PS Tamang.

One Ajay Rai was also arrested.

The Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) workers burnt effigies of CM Prem Singh Tamang in Gangtok on February 3.

Several protests against the language used in the court order and the “use of foreigner tag” for the Sikkimese-Nepali community who are over 78 percent of the population of Sikkim have been going on in Sikkim.

The SDF blamed the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) government for trashing the affidavit filed by the SDF on the “immigrant” tag.

Holding Tamang’s government responsible for the Supreme Court’s ‘foreigner’ tag on the Sikkimese Nepali people, the SDF has also called for a shutdown on February 4 and 5, 2023.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on February 6 informed that the Home Ministry has helped the state government file a review petition in the Supreme Court.
