DGP Singh said that the 70,000-strong team of Assam Police will work for the welfare of the people and senior police officials will be available for the public for 2
Senior IPS officer GP Singh on Tuesday took over as the next DGP of Assam.
Taking charge from outgoing DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, Singh who was serving as Special DGP (Law & Order), Assam Police, said that his top most priority as the top cop of the state would be to continue working for the welfare of the people of Assam, address security concerns of the people of the state with the help and support of the 70,000 strong Assam Police force and ensure easy access to senior police officials for the common public.
“Will try to serve the people of Assam to the best of our abilities. The 70,000 strong team of Assam Police will do our best for the welfare, safety and security of the people of Assam. I have a plan and certain objectives to fulfil. Number one among them would be to address and fulfil whatever internal issues, short-comings and challenges the department has to the best of my abilities. Will ensure that every member of Assam Police gets the respect and dignity each one of them deserves but at the same time I would demand from them full commitment and hard work to fulfil the deficiencies and drawbacks and render the best service to the people of the state,” Singh said addressing the media after taking charge as the next DGP of Assam.
Further elaborating on his plans going forward, DGP Singh said that he will ensure that the common man is able to approach the police with ease, “I believe the main problem is that there is no platform for the people to approach the senior police officials. We want to give such a platform, maybe through social media platform or personal interaction, through which people can speak to the senior police officials.”
In order to ensure this, every senior police official will have to be available in the SP office, DIG office as well as the Police Headquarter for at least 2 hours.
“This will be done in the next 7-10 days so that every day from 11-11:30 AM till 1-1:30 PM, minimum of 2 hours, senior officers are exclusively available for the public.”
Singh, a 1991-batch IPS officer from the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, was on deputation to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) since 2013 where he served as Inspector General. Known to be a ‘tough cop’ Singh’s tenure at NIA was to end in November 2020, but he was rushed back to Assam in December 2019 as ADGP (Law & Order) to control the violent protests that had erupted across the state against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
