2,084 people were infected with TB in 2022, of which 103 people were identified as multi-drug resistance TB, and another 333 TB infected people were HIV positives

As many as 59 people died in Mizoram due to tuberculosis (TB) last year (2022), according to the latest report of the National TB Elimination Programme.

The report said that 2,084 people have been detected to be infected with TB during 2022, of which 103 people were identified as multi-drug resistance TB while 333 TB-infected people were HIV positives.

While 59 people died due to TB infections 86 per cent of those infected were cured, the report said.

Aizawl district had the largest number of TB-infected people at 1,354 followed by southern Lunglei district at 153 while Mizoram-Tripura border Mamit district had the minimum number of TB-infected people at 29 during the period.

The report said that 120 TB-infected people were given assistance under the Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (PMTBMBA) or community support to TB patients.

There are 61 donors under the PMTBMBA in the state.

Officials of the National TB Elimination Programme said that as a large number of TB patients in the state belonged to the poorer section of society, and the treatment needed time and money, the economy of many families went through hard times.

As nutritious food can help TB patients to recover faster and with over 1,000 patients requiring such help, the National TB Elimination Programme officials appealed to the people to donate for the patients.
