10 brave children from Northeast selected for National Bravery Awards

56 children from 17 states of India have been selected for the bravery awards for the years 2020, 2021 and 2022

At least ten young brave hearts from Northeast have been selected for bravery awards for the years 2020, 2021, and 2022 for their exemplary valour and act of courage and efforts in saving others’ lives by risking their own.

The recipients from Northeast are –

  1. Wanlambok Rani from Umden Arka in Ri Bhoi district of Meghalaya. Rani had rescued 4 persons from drowning in Umiam River on August 12, 2022
  2. Forme Khongji from Umkrem, Dawki, in East khasi Hills district of Meghalaya
  3. Papulu Taid from Assam
  4. Nandita Das from Assam
  5. Jolyn Malsawmsanga from Mizoram
  6. Lalramliana from Mizoram
  7. Konjengbam Khnshtina Devi,from Manipur
  8. Pradeep Khoirom from Manipur
  9. Saikhom Raj Singh of Manipur. Saikhom saved a child from drowning in a pond at Uripok Ahanthem Leikai, Imphal West on February 16, 2022
  10. Aliza Chettri from Sikkim’s Upper Sadam

A total of 56 children from 17 different states of India have been selected for the National Bravery Awards which will be given on Republic Day 2023. There are 22 recipients for 2022, 16 recipients for 2021, and 18 recipients for 2022.

Amit Raj, a cadet from Bihar’s Nalanda district who sacrificed his life while saving two children from being burnt to death on December 7, 2022, will be conferred the coveted Bharat Award 2020 posthumously.

The other six brave hearts are –Markandeya, Prahalada, Eklavya, Abhimanyu, Shravan, and Dhruva.

The bravery awards are given by the Government of India and the Indian Council for Child Welfare (ICCW). The awards have been given to 1060 children – 742 boys and 318 girls, since 1957.

The National Bravery Award Scheme was started by ICCW in 1957 to honour children who stand out by displaying exceptional bravery and providing meritorious service and to encourage other children to follow in their footsteps.

The recipients of the award are given financial support from philanthropists till they complete their education. Additionally, the ICCW provides financial aid through its sponsorship programme to students enrolled in professional programmes like engineering and medicine. For others, ICCW provides aid till they complete their graduation.
