Assam celebrates Magh Bihu, people throng fish markets on Uruka
First Published: 14th January, 2023 11:14 IST
Magh Bihu festivities have begun across Assam. People across the state will be celebrating Uruka today.
Uruka marks the end of the Pooh (Pausa) month according to the Hindu calendar and the harvest season ends. The granneries are full and feasting begins. On Uruka people across the state gather for dinners at home or have community feasts. They sit by the bonfire and enjoy traditional Assamese cuisine in the true spirit of the festival. Fish is an integral part of the menu tonight. Hectic preparations could be seen right from dawn today. People across Assam flocked to the markets, particularly to the fish markets, beating the morning chill to buy the best quality fish.
