Boost to peace process in Manipur: Zelaingrong United Front signs Cessation of Operation Agreement with GoI & Manipur Govt

Chief Minister N Biren Singh, senior officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) as well as the Government of Manipur were present in the signing in ceremony.

In a significant development, the proscribed Zelaingrong United Front (ZUF) has entered into a Cessation of Operation Agreement with the Government of India and the Government of Manipur today.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh, senior officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) as well as the Government of Manipur were present in the signing in ceremony. This indeed is a big boost to the the peace process in Manipur.

Meanwhile, the development can also be seen as a thrust to fulfil the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi of ‘Insurgency Free and Prosperous Northeast.’

Representatives of the armed Group agreed to abjure violence and join the peaceful democratic process as established by law of the land. The agreement provides for rehabilitation and re-settlement of armed cadres. A Joint Monitoring Group will be constituted to oversee enforcement of the agreed ground rules.


It may be mentioned, that the two groups of Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) – one led by Raitu Chawang and the other by Jenchui Kamei, had signed an agreement declaring to form ‘one unified body’ in April this year. As per a ‘declaration’ statement, both Chawang and Kamei signed the historic agreement carry forward the long-standing political aspiration of Zeliangrong Community, initiated by the freedom fighter of India, late Rani Gaidinliu.
