Young Woman Shot Dead by Mistake in Manipur, JAC demands immediate arrest of culprit

he 36-year-old woman got caught in the middle of a heated argument between a shop owner and a customer who had shot the woman by mistake.

In a shocking incident, a young woman was killed after she was shot by mistake. The woman identified as 36-year-old Moirangthem Jeemi, wife of M Kiran, got caught in the middle of a heated argument between a shop owner and a customer at Pallel Mamang Leikai in Kakching district. The customer, Kongkham Birjit who fired the shot, was aiming at the shop owner but his bullet hit the woman instead.

According to reports just coming in, the incident took place at 10 PM last night. The deceased woman had stepped out with a friend to buy some items from the shop. When they reached the shop, a customer and the shop owner were engaged in a heated argument. The customer suddenly pulled out a gun and fired a shot targeting the shop owner but the bullet hit the woman instead.

She was rushed to the hospital but she had succumbed to the injuries.

Irate locals set ablaze the old police outpost at Pallel where the assailant was posted. They also blocked the Imphal-Moreh road by burning tyres and vandalised the shop where the unfortunate incident took place. Locals along with women vendors have shut down the Pallel market and staged sit-in protest decrying the incident and demanding befitting punishment to the culprit.

Police fired several tear gas shells, rubber bullet and mock bombs to control the situation. Kakching PS has registered a case and investigation is underway.

The assailant and the shop-owner are on the run. The assailant, Kongkham is a resident of Mayang Imphal Konchak Maning Leikai in Imphal West.

A JAC has been formed in connection with the killing. Today, locals and JAC members are protesting demanding arrest and befitting punishment for the culprit within 24 hours.
The JAC has demanded that in addition to ex-gratia of Rs 20 lakh to the kin of the victim, a suitable government job be provided to one family member of the victim. It also demanded the government to terminate the accused from his service.

It further demanded commitment from the Kakching MLA and Kakching PS SP to arrest the culprit within 24 hours and this be done latest by tonight. It also demanded that the government disclose whether the gun used was a service revolver or a licensed gun.
