The death toll in the tragic bus accident in Manipur’s Noney district on December 21 has mounted to 10. Several others continue to be in a critical condition.

Among the deceased are 9 school girls and 1 teacher.

Most of the deaths have been reported at Raj Medicity Hospital in Imphal where the majority of the injured are being treated.

The accident took place at around 11:30 a.m. at Leimatak when the bus of the Thambalnu Higher Secondary School, Imphal which was heading on a field trip to Leimatak skidded off the state highway while taking a turn and turned turtle landing on its top.

The bus was carrying at least 36 students and teachers of the school.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh visited Raj Medicity and RIMS hospital yesterday evening to take stock of the health condition of the injured and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased from CM’s relief fund.

Those critically injured will get Rs 1 lakh from the Government.

CM N Biren Singh also assured all possible help and assistance to the injured.

Meanwhile, following the incident, the government has banned all school excursions and tour programmes till January 10.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condoled the loss of lives in the accident and prayed for the bereaved families. The Prime Minister also prayed for a speedy recovery for the injured.

PM Modi also announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased from PMNRF fund while the injured would be given Rs. 50,000.
