Lalrinawma is a new face in the current Mizo National Front (MNF) government headed by chief minister Zoramthanga

Lalrinawma, who recently resigned as deputy speaker of Mizoram Assembly, and three other ministers of state were sworn-in as cabinet ministers on Tuesday.

State governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati administered the oath of office and secrecy to K. Lalrinliana, Lalchhandama Ralte, Lalruatkima and Lalrinawma at the circular lawn of the Raj Bhavan in Aizawl.

The first three were elevated from ministers of state, while Lalrinawma is a new face in the current Mizo National Front (MNF) government headed by chief minister Zoramthanga.

Today’s Swearing-in-Ceremony was attended by Chief Minister Zoramthanga, Deputy Chief Minister Tawnluia; Speaker of the Mizoram Legislative Assembly Lalrinliana Sailo; other Ministers, legislators and a host of other dignitaries and high ranking officials.

K. Lalrinliana, Lalchhandama Ralte and Lalruatkima would retain their portfolios as ministers of state, while Lalrinawma was allotted Social Welfare & Tribal Affairs, Excise & Narcotics, Sericulture and Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Departments.

Lalrinawma was allocated the portfolios earlier kept by Dr. K. Beichhua, the minister of state who resigned on December 13 after being asked by the chief minister to submit his resignation as ‘he wanted to reshuffle the cabinet’.

Beichhua’s exit came following the 3 ruling MNF members of the district council (MDCs) supported the no-confidence motion moved by the BJP on November 25, toppling the six-month old Congress-MNF coalition in the Mara Autonomous District Council (MADC) while paving the way for the rule of the saffron party in the council.

While the ruling MNF workers hailed the induction of Lalrinawma in the government, describing that he deserved to be in the council of ministers, civil societies in the MADC area condemned axing of Beichhua as an insult to the Mara community.

This is the first ever ministry reshuffle by Zoramthanga since he took office in the later part of 2018.
