In a major breakthrough, the anti-smuggling unit of Aizawl customs division and Mizoram Police has seized 8.63 kg of illegal gold biscuits worth Rs 2.69 crores.
Acting on specific information, LH Haokip Superintendent of anti-smuggling Unit of Aizawl, intercepted a passenger sumo at custom check gate at Seling village about 40 km east of Aizawl and recovered 52 pieces of gold weighing around 8.63 kg from the Aizawl bound vehicle and worth 2.69 crores.
The two accused were identified as David Muangpi and Somkhankap both from Tahan Myanmar. The consignment was wrapped and concealed by the accused duo on their waist.
In Champhai District near Myanmar border, the police also seized 60 pieces of illegal gold weighing around 9.6 kg from a Aizawl bound maxicab on Wednesday. The value of the seized gold is worth Rs 3.18 crores.
The total quantity and value of illegal gold seized in separate locations in just two days is around 18.5 kg worth Rs 5.87 crores.
