Forest department personnel confiscated an elephant and its mahout was detained while the animal was used in an illegal timber operation at Namphai reserve forest in Margherita sub division in Assam’s Tinsukia district on Wednesday.

Reportedly, the elephant belongs to Khumuk Mossang of Arunachal Pradesh, who happens to be a timber smuggler.

It may be mentioned that there have been several allegations against Mossang in regards to destruction of forests in Assam.
