It was a hectic day for Trinamool Congress Chief and West Bengal Mamata Banerjee who sounded the poll bugle in Meghalaya for the party today in the run-up to the 2023 Assembly elections.
Trying to woo the Khasis, Garos and Jaintias of Meghalaya, the outspoken firebrand Chief Minister accused Assam of snatching their land. During her interaction with TMC party workers in Shillong, CM Banerjee referred to the sensitive interstate border issue and made certain inflammatory statements at a time when CMs of Meghalaya and Assam are working towards finding a solution to the years old border dispute between the two neighbouring states.
Mamata Banerjee also dared the Assam government to return Meghalaya’s land. Banerjee said, “Tell me why they are taking away the land of Meghalaya without consulting the people. We will chase them. If you have the guts return the land to Meghalaya.”
Banerjee also accused the security forces from Assam of entering Meghalaya and killing innocent people. According to the West Bengal Chief Minister, no action has been initiated against those guilty which only establishes the fact that it was an eyewash by the government, who had assured of justice.
Harping on this issue, Mamata Banerjee appealed everyone to vote for the TMC to witness “a change.”
However, things did not fall well in place for the only woman CM in India and was an embarrassment of sorts when she forgot the names of the communities in Meghalaya. While claiming that she is well versed with all the communities in the state, Banerjee forgot the names of the communities. Someone who was also sharing the stage with the TMC chief could be heard prompting her the names.
Trying to o get rid of the ‘Bengali Party’ tag of the TMC, Mamata Banerjee urged everyone to come and join hands together. To substantiate this, Banerjee referred to the National Anthem which was composed by Bengal’s nobel laureate Rabindra Nath Tagore, as well as the Jai Hind slogan coined by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.
