Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s push for peace got a thrust after 1179 rebels of the proscribed BRAU and UDLF-V shunned the path of violence and returned to the mainstream today.
The rebels of the Bru Revolutionary Army of Union (BRAU) and United Democratic Liberation Front of Barak Valley (UDLF-BV) laid down the arms and ammunition in presence of Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary, Cabinet minister Pijush Hazarika and ADGP Hiren Nath. The former insurgents handed over 18 AK series Rifles, two M-16 rifles and 400 rounds of live ammunition.
ADGP (Special Task Force and Special Branch) Hiren Nath speaking to Northeast Live was elated over the response recieved by the Chief Minister’s Call for Peace. The ADGP said, “This shows the trust of the youths on our Honourable Chief Minister, he (Himanta Biswa Sarma) always emphasizes that all groups must join the peace process. They must be a part of the development process which is going on rapidly across the state.”
Besides, ADGP Hiren Nath also insisted that the misguided youths must give up violence and join the peace process. The senior cop believes that within a short span of time all the other small groups will also come to the mainstream and the government will be able to complete the peace process, which will indeed be a long achieved reality.
Interestingly among those who have surrendered include 36 women. When asked about their rehabilitation, ADGP Hiren Nath informed that the rebels especially the women cadres will be given proper rehabilitation in sectors like handloom and weaving. Nath said it will be ensured that they (women cadres) are properly rehabilitiated so that they can meaningfully merge with the society.
Speaker Assam Legislative Assembly Biswajit Daimary informed that the Bru inhabitant areas in the state will be included in the Boro Kachari Welfare Council which has been formed by the Assam government under the State Act. Daimary said that through the Council, funds will be provided to them for their community development, which according to him will not let the Bru community feel deprived and isolated.
Meanwhile, Assam cabinet minister Pijush Hazarika said that a long pending issue has finally been done while he heaped praise on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his able leadership. Hazarika further assured that the government will fulfil the demands put forward by both the rebel groups (BRAU and UDLF-V), which include building of schools, colleges and roads as well as other welfare projects.
