Rahul Chetry, main accused in DU ragging case surrenders after 8 days

After being on the run for eight days, Rahul Chetry, main accused in the Dibrugarh University ragging case, surrendered before Lekhapani Police in Assam’s Tinsukia district on Monday morning. He has been brought to the Dibrugarh Police station.

Rahul, an ex-student of Dibrugarh University and a law student of JB Law College, Guwahati is said to be the main person behind the horrific ragging of Anand Sharma, a first semester MCom student of Dibrugarh University. Rahul has been expelled from the Law College.

Anand was tied and beaten by Rahul and few others from the evening of November 26 till the early hours of November 27. Anand somehow managed to free himself and he jumped off the second floor of the hostel to save himself from his torturers.

Anand was rushed to the hospital where he is now recovering after a critical backbone surgery.

After the incident came to light, several investigations were ordered including a few by the University along with the police and magisterial enquiries ordered by the Assam government.

While police arrested three accused students the same night of the incident, few including Rahul were on the run. Another accused, Kalyan Dutta too had surrendered a day ago. Now a total of 7 students have been arrested in the case.

The University had relieved the three wardens of PNGB hostel of their duties. The ragging incident took place in the PNGB hostel and Anand had given written complaint to the warden of Block C of the hostel on November 17. There were three more incidents of ragging that was going on in the hostel.
