The doctors are demanding fulfilment of four major demand. They are taking care that patients do not suffer during the strike

Relay Hunger strike by the All Manipur Health Services Doctors Association (AMHSDA) continued at District Hospital, Senapati on Tuesday, the fourth day today. The AMHSDA started the relay hunger strike on November 26 across different districts of the state. The relay hunger strike is to put pressure on the government to fulfil their demands.

Addressing media persons, Dr. Ngouniba Peter, District Leprosy Officer, Senapati termed it “most unfortunate” that the state Government is not paying any heed to their demands despite the agitations that there going on.

Dr Peter mentioned that relay hunger strike is the third form of their agitation after the AMHSDA put on black badges and organised sit-in protests to press for their demands.

The Government has declared that medical services are essential, therefore the Government should consider their demands as essential too, Dr Peter said and appealed to the government to fulfil their demands at the earliest.

Earlier speaking to Northeast Live, Dr Lolee P Mao, general secretary AMHSDA, had expressed unhappiness over the fact that the government is yet to address their demands, for which protests erupted 2 years back.

Mao said that the decision to go on relay hunger strike was taken at the Emergency General Body meeting of the AMHSDA held on November 22. A resolution was adopted in the meeting which stated that the doctors cannot wait any longer for the government to act but to intensify the activities further.

Mao added that since the government had informed the AMHSDA of it’s inability to fulfil all the 8 demands, the agitating doctors had curtailed the charter of demands to 4.

Mao said the main demands are- Time bound promotion, extension of superannuation age to 65 years (Both for Specialists & Non-Specialists), NPA should be made effective from January 1, 2016 as per 7th Pay Commission, amending the 1982 Health Service Rule since the AMHDSA considers it to be too outdated.
