Earlier in a report, Northeast live exposed the presence of huge amounts of lead and arsenic in the drinking water of Guwahati and the inefficiency of all the water treatment plants of the city to treat the arsenic content in the water.
However, lately it has been brought to light that the presence of these harmful chemicals has been affecting the people of the city as they have already become prone to various incurable diseases, one of which is cancer.
With all the people of the city showing concern about the presence of lead and arsenic in the drinking water supplied by the water treatment plants, it has now been revealed by the Head of Dept. of Community Medicine of Guwahati Medical College, Dr. Jyotikha Ojah.
Dr. Ojah said that the frequent consumption of water containing high levels of arsenic and lead has led to an increase in skin cancer cases among the people of city and the region. She also added that the presence of lead and arsenic in the water can cause several other serious health hazards.
