Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma on Friday met NHRC Chairperson Justice Arun Kumar Mishra in New Delhi.
Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma today met NHRC Chairperson Justice Arun Kumar Mishra in New Delhi and gave a detailed account of the firing incident in Mukroh, West Jaintia Hills district, Meghalaya. CM Sangma was accompanied by Deputy CM Prestone Tynsong.
“Informed the Hon’ble Chairperson and the members that the Mukroh incident was a clear violation of human rights. Apprised them about the actions that have been taken like the central agency enquiry into the matter. We gave sought their support for necessary action from their end. Also stressed on the need for proper sensitisation of forces deputed in sensitive border areas so that such incidents where precious lives are lost do not reoccur in any part of the country,” CM Sangma said.
CM Sangma met Home Minister Amit Shah yesterday and requested for a central probe into the Mukroh firing incident that killed 5 Meghalaya residents.
Back in Meghalaya, an uneasy calm prevailed in the capital Shillong after yesterday’s incident of arson in the Civil Hospital area of the city where a traffic booth was set ablaze and a city bus was attacked. There were reports of 4 civilians assaulted. A police gypsy and a bus requisitioned by the police were also vandalised.
Majority of the shops kept their shutters down in the city’s commercial hub Police Bazar or Khyndailad. Even government offices either remained shut or wore a deserted look in response to call for non-cooperation given by several pressure groups.
A two-hour shutdown was also observed in Tura in Garo Hills.
Passenger vehicles with Assam registration are still not allowed to enter Meghalaya from Jorabat.
Internet shut down in the 7 districts of West Jaintia Hills, East Jaintia Hills, East Khasi Hills, Ri-Bhoi, Eastern West Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills and South West Khasi Hills continues.
