400th birth anniv Lachit Barphukan; week long celebrations kick starts

Birth anniversary of legendary Ahom general Lachit Barphukan. Week long celebrations begin today. Host of programs lined up.

March past by the uniformed forces — Army, Air Force, BSF, CRPF, SSB, ITBP, CISF, RPF and Assam Police as well as NCC cadets today morning across districts of Assam marked the beginning of the week-long mega celebrations to commemorate the 400th Birth Anniversary of Ahom General Lachit Barphukan.

The march past is part of the Assam Government’s series of events planned to celebrate the 400th birth anniversary of the legendary Ahom general who defeated the Mughal invaders in the 17th century and successfully stopped them from marching forward into Assam and the present northeast India.

The celebrations began across Assam and will conclude on November 25 in New Delhi. The national capital has already been decked up with large hoardings and the Delhi metro coaches being adorned with posters depicting the courage and valour of the Ahom general.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah would attend the concluding events to be held from November 23-25 in New Delhi.

On November 19, essay competition on the life and achievements of Lachit Barphukan would be held in schools, colleges, universities across Assam. On November 20, the state government would officially take over 20 bihgas of land for the development and expansion of Lachit Maidam in Jorhat. An amphitheatre and a 150 ft statue would come up at the Maidam. On November 21-22, all districts would organise blood donation camps, plantation drives and hold several social welfare, cultural and academic events.

From November 23 to 25, the celebrations would be held in New Delhi. On November 23 a national seminar titled The Ahom Saga of Hope, Skill and Courage would be held at Vigyan Bhavan in the national capital. Renowned historians would attend the seminar. Another seminar titled ‘Ignored Histography of Assam’s Assertion’ would be held on November 24. The same day, Union Home Minister Amit Shah would release a documentary on the life and achievements of Lachit Barphukan.

PM Modi would address the gathering on the concluding day, November 25.
Lachit Barphukan was a contemporary of Maratha hero and ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji.
