World Cheese Awards: Swiss cheese Le Gruyère adjudged the best of 2022

The title of World Champion Cheese was awarded to Le Gruyère AOP surchoix, which was presented by Swiss cheesemaker Vorderfultigen and affine Gourmino, out of the 4,434 cheeses served in the competition. Gruyère is a hard cheese from the French-speaking town of Gruyères in Switzerland.

The Guild of Fine Food hosts the World Cheese Awards, a global event. This year’s event was held on November 2nd in Wales. Over 4,000 cheeses were judged by cheesemakers, retailers, buyers, and food critics at the global cheese event.

A panel of 250 judges from 38 countries, including cheesemakers, buyers, retailers, and food writers, judged the event. The cheeses arrived via 19 consolidation points around the world by boat, truck, train, and plane.

There were different entry fees, starting at £52 per product excluding taxes for businesses with less than £1 million in revenue. The entry fee was £75 per product for a company with a turnover of more than £5 million.

During the competition, judges worked in groups of three to identify any cheeses deserving of a gold, silver, or bronze award. They evaluated the cheese’s rind and body, as well as its colour, texture, consistency, and, most importantly, taste. Each team then chose one outstanding cheese as the’super gold.’ The’super gold’ cheese list is then narrowed down to a finalist list of 16 entries.

Gorgonzola Dolce DOP by De’ Magi from Italy, stood at the second position and Âlde Fryske by De Fryske from the Netherlands, finished third.
