Manipur ambush: NIA arrests MNPF rebel. Big breathrough for security forces. Rebel involved in ambush on AR convoy arrested.

In a big breakthrough, the National Investigation Agency has arrested a Manipur Naga People’s Front (MNPF) rebel for his involvement in the ambush of an Assam Rifles convoy in Manipur’s Churachandpur district last year.

The rebel has been identified as Machukring Zamshim Shimray, alias Ningkham, of New Cannon village in Ukhrul district.

Shimray, was arrested in a special operation by a joint team of the NIA, Assam Rifles and police from Yaingangpokpi in Imphal East district.

The NIA had announced a bounty of Rs 4 lakh for information on Shimray after the Manipur ambush. As per the NIA, Machukring Zamshim Shimray, was an active member of the MNPF and was directly involved in the ambush in which seven people were killed.

It was on November 13, 2021 when Commanding Officer of 46th Battalion of Assam Rifles Colonel Viplav Tripathi, his wife, minor son and four troopers of the Assam Rifles lost their lives in the ambush. The convoy was attacked by insurgents near Sialsih village in Churachandpur district of Manipur. Six Assam Rifles personnel were also injured in the attack.
