COVID: Workers flee from China’s iPhone factory

Under China's strict zero-Covid policy, cities are given powers to act swiftly to quell any outbreaks of the virus.
Migrant workers are fleeing from China’s largest iPhone factory in Zhengzhou owing to a lockdown triggered by COVID outbreak. Videos that have surfaced in social media showed people jumping a fence outside the plant, owned by manufacturer Foxconn, in the central city.
Stephen McDonell, who is the BBC correspondent in China, tweeted, “Workers have broken out of #Apple’s largest assembly site, escaping the Zero #Covid lockdown at Foxconn in #Zhengzhou. After sneaking out, they’re walking to hometowns more than 100 kilometers away to beat the Covid app measures designed to control people and stop this. #China.”

It has been reported, that the migrant workers are fleeing due to lockdown induced chaos and shortage of food materials.
Zhengzhou, a city of about 10 million people, has been placed under lockdown due to signifcant rise in COVID cases. 167 new locally transmitted cases have been reported this week, as compared to 97 infections in the previous week in Zhengzhou.
Under China’s strict zero-Covid policy, cities are given powers to act swiftly to quell any outbreaks of the virus. This includes anything from full-scale lockdowns to regular testing and travel restrictions.
