Cyclone SITRANG: 4 NE states on Red Alert

It is very likely to continue to move north-northeastwards and weaken into a depression during next 3-4 hours.

The cyclonic storm “SITRANG” pronounced as “Si-Trang” over coastal Bangladesh moved north-northeastward with a speed of 56 kmph during past 6 hours and weakened into a Deep Depression and lay centered over Bangladesh, about 90 km northeast of Dhaka, 60 km north-northwest of Agartala, and 160 km southwest of Shillong.

It is very likely to continue to move north-northeastwards and weaken into a depression during next 3 hours and further into a well marked low pressure area during subsequent 6 hours.

Meanwhile, the Meghalaya government has ordered for closure of schools in East Khasi Hills district in view of the prevailing weather conditions due to cyclonic storm SITRANG.

The IMD forecast shows continued intense rainfall in the East Khasi Hills district for today.

It may be mentioned that the IMD has already issued a Red Alert in view of SITRANG in the 4 Northeastern states of- Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura.
