Mizoram: Rodents wreak havoc in paddy fields
First Published: 20th October, 2022 18:17 IST
Swarms of rodents have damaged several hectares of land across the state. The worst-hit district is Mamit.
Several hectares of cultivation have been destroyed by swarms of rats as rodent menace continues to ravage the paddy fields in different parts of Mizoram.
The worst-hit district is Mamit which is along the Mizoram, Tripura and Bangladesh border. At least 20 villages have been affected by the menace, with 260 hectares of crop areas were destroyed.
Many farmers lost almost all their harvests in Tuirum, Damparengpui, Lallen, Kawnmawi, Hreichuk and Khawrihnim villages in the district and were facing acute shortage of food.
Agriculture experts said that the rat population explosion was triggered by the flowering of Dendrocalamuslongispathus, locally known as ‘Rawnal’ which had commenced three years ago.
