ILP in Sikkim: SKM never opposed implementation

First Published: 20th October, 2022 14:12 IST

The SKM government in Sikkim led by CM PS Tamang has never opposed the idea of implementing ILP in the state, affirmed SKM leadership.

The ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha has responded to the demand for ILP in the state by Bhaichung Bhutia-led Hamro Sikkim Party.

Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live, SKM spokesperson Bikash Basnet said that the state government has never opposed the implementation of ILP, adding that Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang himself told in the assembly that his government will be implementing ILP in Sikkim.

However, Basnet added that in order to implement ILP, it was necessary to grant ST Status to the 12 left out communities first before introducing ILP.

Earlier, in June the PS Tamang government, had announced for the constitution of a Committee to pursue the Scheduled Tribe (ST) status of the 12 left-out communities of Sikkimese origin.

The number of communities seeking ST status includes Gurung, Mangar, Rai, Sunwar, Mukhia, Jogi, Thami, Yakha, Bahun, Chettri, Newar, and Majhis.

Meanwhile, last year the Sikkim Chief Minister had submitted a memorandum to Union Home Minister Amit Shah demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to 12 left out communities of the state and reservation of seats in Sikkim Legislative Assembly for Limboo and Tamang communities.
