What will be the main agenda of the Trinamool Congress in the 2023 assembly election? TMC will push for Single Meghalayan Identity.

Meghalaya TMC leader and former Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma has said that his party is approaching the ensuing assembly election with the primary agenda of uniting the Khasis, Jaintias and Garos in the state in a bid to achieve an unified Meghalayan identity.

In a tell-all interview with Northeast Live Editor-in-Chief Wasbir Hussain, the TMC leader said that it is unfair to continue with the petty Khasi, Jaintia and Garo politics.

According to Mukul Sangma, this has always led to a fractured mandate or a hung assembly in the state. The TMC leader mentioned that he seeks to look at every resident of the state as Meghalayans, rather than a Khasi, Garo or Jaintia.

Sangma believes this approach will infuse a sense of realization among the people that everyone must come together keeping in view the future of the state.

When asked if the TMC would forge an alliance with regional forces like the UDP, Dr Mukul Sangma said that in the prevailing political situation there is a hunger for change among the electorate. According to the TMC leader, there is a silent majority who are waiting for the elections. Mukul Sangma has high hopes that the TMC will be the best choice as an alternative to both the NPP and the Congress.

Besides, the former chief minsiter maintained that the TMC will look into ways as to aggregate it’s reach, in such a way that his party comes close to the halfway mark. He said that the TMC has an uphill task ahead but is ready for all kind of challenges.

Mukul Sangma also responded to a query on the present status of his party MLAs who, he recently said were in touch with other political parties.

Sangma said that many MLAs, not only from the TMC, are in touch with other parties. The TMC leader believes that lot of surprises may spring up in the coming days. Sangma said that MLAs mulling to jump ship considering the prevailing political situation in the state is a reality.

Sangma in fact went on to say that prior to his interview with Editor-in-Chief Wasbir Hussain, he had received a number of phone calls from MLAs of other parties showing interest in the Trinamool Congress. Quite an element of surprises are on the cards, Mukul Sangma said.

Asked whether he was forced to leave the Congress, Mukul Sangma said that was obviously tough for him to quit the Grand Old Party. Sangma further added that it is the people’s interests which supercedes everything and that any politician must only have the sole purpose of fulfiling this purpose with utmost sincerity and committment.

Last but not the least, Mukul Sangma launched a scathing attack on the MDA led coalition for keeping mum on issues like corruption and illegal coal mining.
