In a significant development, the agitating journalist fraternity in Manipur has resolved to resume work today. This was decided at a crucial meeting held on Wednesday.
The meeting convened by the All Manipur Working Journalists Union, the Editors Guild Manipur, and Manipur Hill Journalists came in the backdrop of the sit-in protest against the alleged threat given by two factions of a militant outfit.
In the meeting, the journalists’ union decided that moving forward, any news item that is deemed controversial will not be published or aired on news channels.
Further, the union also reiterated upholding the freedom of the press with the support of CSOs.
It may be mentioned here that the journalists protested against the threat given by two factions of a militant outfit wherein one faction allegedly pressurized to publish an e-mail press release of a particular event, while the other faction is threatened against its publication in any local daily.
The situation came to such a point that the journalists halted the publication of newspapers or broadcasting news on local channels since October 10.
