An entire project under Jal Jeevan Mission in Songsak C and RD Block in East Garo Hills, Meghalaya has been built using PVC pipes instead of the approved GI or HDPE.

The department claims that the villagers were responsible for the theft of the pipes while construction was underway.

The project in question was undertaken in the village and apparently completed in 2020, but according to the villagers, they have yet to see a drop of water from the construction.

The village has over 70 households, and the total project cost is just over Rs 25 lakhs.

Meanwhile, to prove that they were not involved in any theft, the villagers dug up the site where the pipes were provided, revealing broken PVC pipes inside.

According to PHE sources, the project was assigned to one Sahidur Rehman, a contractor from West Garo Hills, who revealed that because the amount sanctioned was insufficient to use GI pipes, a verbal approval from the JE of PHE Songsak was taken.

He confirmed that money for the village project he completed had been released to him, contradicting the department’s claims that GI pipes were stolen by the villagers.
