Manipur government allows liquor to be sold in hotels

In what can be termed a historic decision the N Biren Singh-led state cabinet yesterday decided to allow the sale of liquor in the state for the first time since 1991.

The sale of liquor, however, will not be allowed in the open market and will be restricted to only hotels with 20 rooms or more.
This was informed by minister Letpao Haokip after a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister N Biren Singh yesterday.
However, those transporting liquor from one place to another would require a possessing a permit, he said.
The minister said the partial lifting of prohibition would generate at least Rs 600 crore of annual revenue.
The decision, however, was also taken in view of health hazards caused by the consumption of illicit liquor, he said.
