A day after the Gauhati High Court ruling, the Tamil Nadu government has finally allowed the 4-member Assam team to inspect Joymala, the elephant. The team will be inspecting the jumbo this afternoon.
The team was sent to Chennai on September 3 as a directive by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and was tasked with the responsibility of catering to the elephant’s medical needs urgently.

This came after videos of Joymala allegedly being tortured by its mahout in a Madurai temple went viral on social media and drew severe criticism. The team was, however, not allowed by Tamil Nadu authorities to inspect the jumbo.
It was only on Friday that the Gauhati High Court gave a 3-day deadline to the four-member Assam team to inspect the elephant. The court had also stated that the team must be given security cover by the Tamil Nadu authorities.
And not just this, the court has also sent notices to the Union Forest and Environment minister and Tamil Nadu DGP, and has asked both to respond by September 28.
