The demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for Meiteis in Manipur is growing louder with each passing day.
The Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee of Manipur (STDCM )today threatened to resort to violent and undemocratic forms of protests in the next 10 or 15 days against the state government’s indifferent attitude towards its demand.
The committee members along with locals of Tera staged a sit-in protest at Tera Bazaar in Imphal West today, in line with its demand to include the Meitei community in ST List.

Meanwhile, speaking to Northeast Live, General Secretary of STDCM, K. Bhogendrajit said that the committee is only trying to spread awareness on the need for Meiteis to be recognised as Scheduled Tribe.
He further urged the government to respect the democratic approach and furnish the requisite documents at the earliest.
It may be mentioned that earlier on September 6, Women vendors of Kakwa Market in Imphal West staged a sit-in protest along with the STDCM, demanding the inclusion of Meiteis in the ST list.
