In a fresh development to the illegal cattle transportation from across Assam via Dhubri to Bangladesh, Moranhat police seized on Thursday two truckloads of cows.
Though the drivers and handymen have claimed to possess valid papers, yet they have not been able produce the permission papers when the vehicles were seized.
Police investigation is on even as the police have asked the drivers to produce the papers at the police station.
In fact, official data on livestock seized along the international border show that the share of cows in the illegal cattle trade from India to Bangladesh has been on an average of 12% over the past four years.
The Border Security Force tasked with stopping smuggling of bovine animals besides guarding the frontier, hands them over to the customs department, which in turn auction it.
The valuation of cattle to be auctioned are classified into broadly five heads—cow, buffalo, bull or ox, calf-male and female.
Dhubri is one of the most vulnerable smuggling spots among the 33 areas along the border identified by the government.
It may be mentioned that reports have it that most of the bovines seized in the outposts happen to be males.
