Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that SOPs are being put in place to check entry of jihadi elements in the guise of religious teachers.

Following the arrest of 2 more jihadi elements taking shelter in the state in the guise of Imams, the Assam Government has decided to put in place a strict process for identification of any religious teacher coming from outside.

Speaking to media persons today, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that SOPs are being put in place to check entry of jihadi elements in the guise of religious teachers.

As such any Imam or religious teacher coming to Assam from outside will have to register their names in a portal being made for the purpose of keeping track of those keeping into the state for teaching in Madrassas.

It may be mentioned that two persons, Abdus Subhan Imam of Tinikunia mosque and Jalaluddin Sheikh, Imam of Tilapara Natun Masjid, both in Goalpara were arrested in the last 48 hours for alleged links with the Al Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent.

During interrogation, it was revealed that the duo organized a religious gathering back in December 2019 at Tilapara Madrassa where many Bangladeshi nationals with links to AQIS were invited as guest speakers.

Police added that they were involved in providing logistic support as well as sheltering the now absconding Bangladeshi nationals.

Also, their active linkages have been found with Barpeta and Morigaon modules of the AQIS and Ansarullah Bangla Team.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed that as many as 6 Bangladeshi nationals had come to Assam to expand the jihadi network. While one has been arrested, the remaining 6 are still absconding.
