Amid the ongoing process of updation of the National Register of Citizens in Assam, leaders of 28 organisations including the All Assam Students Union met NRC state coordinator Prateek Hajela at the NRC head office to take stock of the proceedings.
The organisations demanded that the authorities must ensure that names of illegal migrants does not find a way to the NRC. Earlier, Ali Ahmed, a resident of Barchapori at Lahorighat in Morigaon district of Assam who was declared as a foreigner by the foreigners tribunal in Sivasagar on November 2011 had made it to the list of genuine citizens during the ongoing process of update.
Another incident of illegal migrants making a cut to the NRC was when names of two more persons of a declared foreigner’s family were included in NRC in the same district. The foreigners’ tribunal had declared 9 members of Abdul Kadir’s family as foreigners. Surprisingly, names of Kadir’s grandson and son have figured in the draft national register of citizens.
