The Manipur Legislative Assembly has adopted resolution to establish a state population commission and also to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

The resolution was adopted following a private members’ resolution moved by MLA Kh. Joykisan.

Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh while joining the discussion, said that it will be the desire of all the members to institute a population commission and to implement the NRC.

He called for drawing attention of authorities concerned in this regard.

Earlier, the MLA raised concern over the reported infiltration of outsiders to Manipur.

He pointed out that there is population growth of 153.3 percent in the hill districts of Manipur from 1971 to 2001. However, during the period from 2001 to 2011, the population growth jumped to 250.9 percent. The valley districts registered a population growth of 94.8 percent and 125.4 percent for the period from 1971 to 2001 and 2001 to 2011 respectively.

It may be mentioned that recently, the United Naga Council (UNC) and Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) had come together demanding institution of a population commission and implementation of NRC to check influx of illegal immigrants. Various civil bodies including the JCILPS had also pressed for similar demands.
