China is losing no time to target Taiwan as Nancy Pelosi wrapped up her visit today. China has clamped trade sanctions on Taiwan. It will no longer import fish and fruit from the island. At the same time it has also halted sand imports to it.
The visit by US house of representative speaker Pelosi had triggered a diplomatic firestorm between US, China and Taiwan.
In a notification issued by China, it stopped the import of fruits & fish over excessive ‘pesticides’ and detection of coronavirus on food packages.
China considers Taiwan as part of the one China realm and any move made by other countries to deal with it as sovereign nations evokes strong reaction by the Asian giant.
Nancy Pelosi reached Taiwan on August 2nd evening. Even before Pelosi’s visit China reacted strongly asking US to reconsider her visit.
Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Xie Feng “urgently summoned” the US Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns late Tuesday night. It lodged stern representations and strong protests over Pelosi’s visit. Notably it is the highest by any top US leader’s visit to Taipei in 25 years.
During the visit Pelosi indicated that while the US respects one China policy, at the same time it stands in solidarity with the people of Taiwan. Nancy Pelosi met with Taiwanese leaders, its President Tsai Ing-Wen. Later she flew to South Korea on Wednesday.
