Manipur records alarming rise in vehicle theft

Manipur has apparently become a hotbed for vehicle theft with the state reporting as many as 3,519 cases of vehicle theft in the last five years till July 25, 2022.

Interestingly, the stolen vehicles included 33 heavy vehicles like excavators and trucks.
Manipur Transport Minister Khashim Vashum today informed the house that 2,996 two wheeler vehicles, 49 three wheelers and 441 four wheelers were also stolen during the said period.
However, as informed by the minister, only 284 stolen vehicles were recovered and 243 vehicle lifters were arrested so far out of which 94 have been convicted.
He further said that one case is under trial, seven cases are pending and chargesheets have been submitted in connection with three cases.
Chief Minister N. Biren Singh also raised concern over the rising number of vehicle thefts in the state as he noted that such cases triggered mob justice in the society.
He said that the government has already established anti-vehicle theft cell of the Manipur police for its crackdown on stealing of vehicles.
Chief Minister Biren also highlighted that vehicles bearing no registration numbers are being confiscated and verified in border town Moreh in Tengnoupal district. The same drive has been initiated in other districts as well to curb illegal import and export of stolen vehicles, he added.
