Negligence sinks advanced boats for Majuli

In an instance of sheer negligence and lackadaisical attitude of employees of the water transport department, as many as 7 advanced waterboats worth Rs 7 crore sank into the river in Majuli’s Nimatighat.

These included 5 double-engine waterboats, and 2 single-engine waterboats.

As per reports, the waterboats where docked in an unsecure way. The special waterboats were brought to Nimatighat upon the directives of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma after the tragic boat capsize incident last September where three precious lives were lost.

Water transport of is the main mode of Transport between Jorhat’s Nimatighat and Majuli.

The Majuli boat capsize that rocked Assam on September last year had put the scanner on the type of boats plying on the busy water route. It was found that most of the boats were running on single engines which put the life of the commuters under jeopardy.
