Situation turned volatile in Imphal on Monday, when police resorted to tear gas shelling to disperse student protesters from demonstrating near DM College, demanding resumption of regular classes in government colleges.
At least 15 students have been injured in the clash that took place just 200 metres from the State Assembly. The protest erupted while the state assembly session was underway.
The protest comes at a time when college teachers in the state are boycotting classes demanding implementation of 7th UGC Pay.
Meanwhile, the All Manipur Students’ Union or AMSU has said that it fully endorses the teachers’ demands for 7th Pay and asked the N Biren Singh-led government to address the issue at the earliest.
AMSU HRD Secretary Bruce Pebam also appealed to the teachers to find resort to other means of agitation which do not hamper the students’ studies.
