The Gauhati High Court yesterday stayed the case registered in a lower court against Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The case had been filed in the SDJM court by Congress MP Abdul Khaleque over a comment made by Chief Minister Sarma with regards to the Gorukhuti eviction drive last year.

Khaleque filed a police complaint against Chief Minister Sarma in Dispur Police Station on December 28, 2021, accusing him of making inflammatory remarks in connection with an eviction drive in Darrang district.

As the Dispur Police Station rejected to register the FIR, Khaleque then went to court.

Later, the SDJM court had directed the Assam police to file a case against the Assam Chief Minister.

The state government had in response filed an appeal in the high court against the decision of the SDJM court following which the stay order was passed yesterday.

Meanwhile, the high court has also issued a notice against MP Abdul Khaleque.
