The first phase of polling for the Manipur Assembly elections have begun for 38 assembly constituencies.
Manipur Governor La Ganesan, Chief Minister N Biren Singh were among those who cast their votes early in the morning. Whereas the Governor cast his vote in Sagolband , CM N. Biren Singh accompanied by his wife reached a polling booth in Heingang early in the morning to excercise their franchise.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his message to Manipur voters urging young voters to cast vote. He also appealed for record turnout in Manipur polls.
A total of 173 candidates, including 15 females, are in the fray in this phase. Voting began at 7 am and will continue till 4 pm. The voters who are Covid positive or are under quarantine will be allowed to vote at the last hour, between 3 pm to 4 pm.
Elections for the 60-member Manipur Assembly is taking place in two phases – February 28 and March 5.
