Massive protests have erupted at Tura in Meghalaya’s West Garo hills demanding the ouster of CEM of Garo Hill Autonomous District Council Rakesh Sangma. Protesters rallied to the Chandmari playground

Massive protests have erupted at Tura in Meghalaya’s West Garo hills demanding the ouster of CEM of Garo Hill Autonomous District Council Rakesh Sangma.
Protesters rallied to the Chandmari playground and were seen waiting with black flags to greet Chief Minister Conrad Sangma prior to his arrival for inaugurating the sports facility.
Prior to this, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma had to face a similar situation during his visit to Ampati on Thursday.
Effigies of the Chief Minister and CEM Rakesh Sangma were burnt by protesters on the same day in Rajabala.
Protests were also witnessed yesterday in the Garo Hills demanding the removal of the GHADC chairman.
Meanwhile, reports are doing rounds that CEM Rakesh Sangma, who has been accused by pressure groups of not following Garo customs, may put down papers on Monday.
If this happens, it will come as a big setback to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma who had recently backed the appointment of Rakesh Sangma as the CEM stating that he has been democratically elected.
The pressure groups in Garo Hills have accused Rakesh Sangma of not following Garo customs since his father came from the Nepali community. Therefore, they are organising a series of protests demanding his resignation.
They also turned down the request to put the agitation on hold until the issue is resolved.
