Meghalaya HC takes suo moto cognizance of Illegal coal mining in West Khasi Hills

In a big development the Meghalaya High Court has taken suo moto cognizance of reports of illegal rat hole mining in Nengchigen village in the state’s West Khasi Hills district.

In a big development the Meghalaya High Court has taken suo moto cognizance of reports of illegal rat hole mining in Nengchigen village in the state’s West Khasi Hills district.

The High Court said that the state government to immediately look into the allegations of illegal mining and directed the Chief Secretary, Meghalaya and DGP to file an independent report on the matter within a week, preferably upon visiting the areas.

The High Court also directed that the issue of coal mining needs to be looked into without any political inteference or else the Court may be constrained to appoint a fact finding committee or even put up a special investigation team in place or take the assistance of some agency so that the matter is thoroughly investigated in accordance with law and the persons involved are brought to book. The matter requires immediate serious attention, the court noted.
