The outlawed outfit HNLC which has been operating in Meghalaya has expressed its willingness to come to the mainstream and its readiness to talk with the Government of India without any pre-condition and has decided to give peace a chance once again in the state.
This indeed is a crucial development after the peace process derailed following the alleged fake encounter of HNLC general secretary Cheristerfield Thangkhiew, who was assigned to carry forward the talks with the Government of India.
A statement signed by Sainkupar Nongtraw, General secretary cum Publicity secretary of HNLC has confirmed about the rebel group’s intention to join the peace process.
The statement added that the group’s decision comes after much consultation with different stakeholders including the elders. The HNLC said that it is ready to talk within the ambit of the Indian constitution. The HNLC in its statement said that the ball is now in the government’s court and hopes that appointment of an interlocutor will resolve the issue soon.
Only a few days back an IED blast was carried out by the outfit in the heart of Shillong sending shockwaves through the state. In the meantime, different organisations and individuals in Megalaya were voicing their support for renewed peace talks between the govt and the outfit.
