Newly appointed Deputy Commissioner of Arunachal’s East Siang district Tayi Taggu has made a clarion call for more public and government support in order to protect and preserve the historic D’Ering Wildlife Sanctuary.

Taggu who is on a 2-day visit to the sanctuary on Sunday expressed concern over the fact that wildlife of unprotected forest areas are rapidly depleting due to excessive hunting.

While visiting the DEWS’s Borguli Wildlife Range, which is one of the major wildlife habitats of the riverine sanctuary, Taggu said that he is a natural lover of wildlife and has been directly and indirectly discouraging hunting and killing of animals and birds.

He also batted for constant surveillance of the sanctuary’s core zone and hunting prone zones with the help of drones as field staff often cannot reach those vulnerable areas due to inaccessibility.

The Deputy Commissioner further hoped that the government will extend more support in protecting the sanctuary’s rich flora & fauna by sanctioning adequate funds and recruitment of Forest Guards and Foresters.

The D’Ering Wildlife Sanctuary, which covers an area of approximately 190 square kilometres, is a popular eco-tourism destination in India, and it serves as a winter home for migratory birds as well as species of birds from Siberia and Mongolia.
