In a big move, the United Liberation Front of Assam or ULFA-Independent (ULFA-I) has announced that it will not be issuing any bandh calls on Republic Day 2022. Not just this, the outfit has also stated that it would not engage in armed protests on January 26. This has been informed through a communique by ULFA-I commander-in-chief Paresh Baruah. Baruah said the decision has been taken in consideration with the current COVID scenario in the state.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had appealed to the proscribed outfit not to declare any bandh and issue any boycott call.

It is to be noted that ULFA-I had refrained from issuing any bandh or boycott call during August 15 last year too. The outlawed outfit has declared a ceasefire from May 15, 2021, which is being renewed at regular intervals. In the meantime, Indian authorities have stepped back from conducting any operations against ULFA-I.
